Doctoral thesis: The Homogenisation of Writing in Meiji-era Japan
My thesis looks at the sudden fall in the use of hentaigana (variant forms of hiragana) in books printed with movable type around 1890 CE, differences in normative texts on kanazukai (“spelling” when using hiragana or katakana), and how certain modern-day typographical norms regarding acceptable characters to end a line on are either observed or not observed by different printers in the same periodical publication over time.

“what happened at the station” in Nanoloop Mobile Compilation 2
Everyone made amazing tracks for this compilation, and I enjoyed making my track, too. This is the track that I was referring to in my blog post on writing about art. You can also find the first compilation here.
ごはんにする？ おふろにする？ それとも… 鮫？鮫？鮫？Let me be honest with you—this joke is one of the main reasons why I wanted to create this whole “past projects” page in the first place (the other reason is the doctoral thesis). I posted this for a “fill-in-the-blank” competiton held to promote M2’s Hisho Same Same Same collection of STG games. The Japanese text came to me while getting ready to leave in the morning, and then I thought of an equivalent English joke on the bike while taking my children to nursery (I hurriedly made the image in Microsoft Paint right before starting work, and I ended up forgetting to put a space after the second question mark when arranging the layout of the top text). I’m rather proud of how I managed to incorporate a writing-based joke in each language. I won a poster and some stickers for it, too!
